Port Wine Stain Birthmarks

Port Wine Stain Birthmarks are vascular lesions caused by venual malformations that allow blood to pool in the affected area. It is generally believed that the underlying cause is a defect in the nerves that control the diameter of the affected blood vessels which allows them to dilate abnormally. It takes several treatments to diminsih the appearance of a port wine birthmark. Since the underlying cause is nerve related these birthmarks will generally reappear over time and require subsequent periodic retreatment to keep them faded.
